The underwire, the support ally for your chest
There are two main categories of lingerie: underwired bras and non-wired bras . But what is an armature actually used for? When I wear my bra, the underwire hurts, what can I do to avoid this? My bra frame broke, what should I do? We tell you everything about this essential bra model and how to wear it well but also preserve it.
1. What is an armature used for ?
The underwire is a rigid metal structure inserted into the bra to provide optimal support for your chest . In the shape of an arc, it is placed around the cap in a semi-circle. This reinforcement is particularly appreciated by generous busts because it reduces tension in the shoulders and back and provides optimized support. To vary the pleasures, there are also swimsuits with underwire , 1 and 2 pieces, so that your chest is supported all the way to the beach and the swimming pool.

The underwire is integrated into the bra so that it is hidden and does not come into contact with the skin. In addition to providing support to the chest, the underwired bra also gives a more defined shape to the breast for a more harmonious chest under your outfit. At Sans Complexe Lingerie, we use nylonized metal frames with shape memory because they are solid and adapt to the traction of the back to adjust to the chest and provide real support.
2. My bra underwire hurts, is this normal?
Obviously, no. The underwire is there to support you and provide you with comfort, so it is not normal for it to hurt when you wear your bra. What could be done to fix it ? You must first identify the problem. There can be several causes:
- The most common is that you are wearing the wrong size bra . The underwire must be placed around the chest without being on it, nor too far away but at the birth of the breast. The tightness of the back should also match your comfort needs. If the cup does not fit the shape of your chest or the back measurement is too tight or too loose, you should take your measurements again to identify your size. - Bra wear is also a likely cause . A bra that you have worn for a long time and that has undergone several washes deteriorates over time. Putting your bra on by placing the fastener in the front and then turning the bra towards the back can also damage the underwire and cause premature wear.

3. My bra frame is broken, what should I do?
No one is perfect and nothing is foolproof, so it's possible that your bra's underwire will break. As mentioned earlier, wear, time and frequent use of the bra are probable causes. An ill-fitting bra, engaging in strenuous, high-impact activities, or even washing too harshly can strain your underwire to the point of no return. Putting on the bra may also seem trivial, but it is important to put it on by the straps, placing and fastening the closure in the back.
If this is the case, it is strongly recommended that you stop wearing your bra because it risks hurting you, even injuring you and no longer doing its job of supporting you properly. What if I removed it and made it into a bra without underwire? As the bra is constructed to incorporate this small piece of metal, removing the underwire would avoid discomfort and injury but the bra would no longer be suitable for supporting your breasts. Here are our tips for preserving your underwired bra:
- Careful washing: when you wash your bra, we recommend that you do it either by hand to be as delicate as possible, or do a machine wash by putting your lingerie in a washing net , which allows you to protect the product.
- Even if you have your favorite little one in your wardrobe, it is still advisable to vary and change your bra every day to preserve them and use them for longer.
The underwire is an asset for maintaining your chest which simply requires our attention and care to lead a long life and provide the support we require of it. And what about the bra without underwire? See you in the next article!
